Heres my plan to keep myself engaged and productive during this seasonIdentify the Skills that Challenging Times HoneGrowth is always a bit painful. So maybe its a good thing that the year starts off difficult. Its our conditioning for the new year 2016 isnt just going to just hand us a victory. We need to prove ourselves first. We need to earn it. As Ive thought this through Ive recognized some skills that this season teaches for me, its resilience, toughness and grit. These are hard skills to sharpen, but I need them just as much as any other professional tools. Identifying these valuable byproducts of my annual winter struggle makes my endeavors seem noble. I am not struggling aimlessly. There are lessons to be learned and skills to be garnered. So identify what you are learning from your experience. Struggle is a truly magnificent teacher. You are the narrator of your own story. Instead of describing how it wears you down, brschchen your narrative and recognize how it builds your character.Integrate Exercise Into Your Work Day Exercise really does make you feel better. I love to exercise, but the hard part is getting started. Once Im moving, though, Im surprised I ever balked. As soon as I start warming up my stress level drops and I start feeling happy and energized. Exercise always helps. Dont get fancy. Do what is easy and available to you. Sit on a yoga ball. Walk to the office or the train. Take the stairs. If your company has a wellness program see if there may be a lunchtime exercise class. This is a really important time for physical activity. It will make you feel vibrant and proud of yourself. Plus its really good for your immune system. Be Social Recognize that this season sets the tone for the year. So dont get stuck in your office or cubicle. Meet a former coworker for lunch. Enjoy a happy hour with your work friends. Grab coffee with a favorite colleague. Put yourself out there, because being social is energizing, and that is what you need right now. Winter doesnt have to bring us down. We can do anything we choose to with this season. This year, I suggest we fully embrace it and the opportunities it presents for self-assessment and growth.

Essentially we developed a new power supply that was small, efficient, and relatively cheap, and we were looking for potential applications for it, says team member Luke Raymond, who is pursuing his Ph.D. in electrical engineering. One we saw was PEF. For this, if you have a liquid which has bacteria inside the liquid and you place an electric field through that liquid, the cell walls of the bacteria become polarized and they stretch. If the electric field is high enough, you can actually rip apart the cell wall just by app lying this high-voltage pulse through the liquid, says Raymond. The concept, he explains, can be applied to milk as a non-thermal method of pasteurization, an alternative to heating up the liquid to a very high temperature and cooling it back down againa processthat is very energy intensive. The voltage required resulted in it being inherently very expensive and, if youre doing this on a large industrial scale, it couldnt compete with the thermal level of pasteurization, he adds. The Stanford team, therefore, saw an opportunity to develop a more portable and modular approach. ur thought was to bring the pulse electric field process to any kind of liquid, but particularlyto milk in emerging countries. Theyre dealing with major problems such as spoilage, he says. A lot of milk in those countries i snt pasteurized and a decent amount of the milk goes bad before it even can get to a pasteurization facility, he adds. Raymond explains how the full system works. Its the power supply portion which is what we developed that delivers high-voltage pulses, then theres the electro portion where all the magic happens in terms of the liquid, he says. Thats two stainless-steel tubes separated by an insulator and one connects to the positive supply of the output, one to the negative. As the liquid flows through this tube with the insulator in between, theres a pulse of electric fields that is generated between the two stainless-steel electrodes. The liquid then gets exposed to these pulses of the high voltage. Were at about 500 milliliters per minute in terms of the flow rate and would ultimately like to be closer totwo liters per minute says Raymond.
